Thanks a lot. Birds in Flight has been a theme of mine for a while, ie capturing nice sharp photographs while the bird is in action. Yes, I bet it's a Red-tailed hawk, figuring they are common around here, and it's certainly not a Red-shouldered, which is also common here. Dark phase- I think you got it.

This one is a bit tricky. It's obviously a buteo, but which species? I'm just an amateur birder, living on the opposite side of the country from you, but my guess is it's a dark-phase, immature western red-tailed hawk. Regardless as to what species it is, that's a really cool photo.
